This year marks 21 years of SMTA Dallas. The show is happening today, March 19, at the Plano Events Center, with just over 100 booths. As the show was being set up yesterday, Marcy LaRont sat down with Gary Tanel, show organizer and director of membership, to discuss the show's growth, selling out (again) this year, and how professional associations with this type of volunteer work and industry involvement are important. We’ve been planning this issue on artificial intelligence for the past few months, and, in fact, I had already written this column about a month ago. Then I went to IPC APEX EXPO and upended it all. I originally had compared AI to drag racing in that (CPU) horsepower and new (data) vehicles have steadily delivered higher performance competition. That seemed pretty accurate given how generative AI models dominated the popular media with amazing results—and sometimes spectacular crashes.
